Step 1:

Let's practice making zippy zig-zag lines. Use the zig-zag template as a guide. Start at the dot and end at the star. Start with a sharp turn zig zag line. Next is a slow wave line, with smooth up and down moves. Now try a swirly line, with round circle curly ends.
